Bolero was popularized by the Dudley Moore movie *10*. I don't know that Walton's First Symphony is popular at all. In the UK Torvill & Dean were even more responsible for Bolero's popularity than Bo Derek.

A curious, off-the-wall question popped into mind recently:  Do you folks know of any sweet, lyrical soli for trumpet or for trombone within a symphony?  I can't immediately recall any right off the top of my head.

That's why it was used in the movie

Weren't they considerably later than the movie? 10 - 1979 Torvill & Dean's perfect score with Bolero was at the 1984 Olympic Games.

You appear to believe, Peter, that Ravel's Boléro invariably occupies 18 1/2 minutes of playing time.  It does not.  The timing of uncut performances on various current CDs ranges from 13:25 to 16:13. Bernstein/NYP is 15:38. Boulez/NYP is 15:22. Chicago/Solti knocks it off at 14:50 and so on. A performance taking 18:30 would be very slow but not impractical. The popularity of the work predates by decades the movie you cite, and the skaters also. cheers
